Iran Issues Statement on Preconditions Following UN Talks in New York
Following a critical three-hour meeting held at the United Nations headquarters with Qatari mediation, the administration in Tehran denied claims that it had abandoned its negotiation preconditions.
While a three-hour secret meeting between US and Iranian officials in New York has caused international mobility, differing statements regarding the parties' negotiation positions continue to emerge.
Critical Contact Held in New York
A surprise meeting was held at the United Nations headquarters in New York with Qatar's mediation. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met with US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
Differing Evaluations by the Parties
While the US side described the three-hour meeting as extremely productive and constructive, this positive atmosphere was also reflected in global markets. The barrel price of Brent crude fell below 100 dollars for the first time in two weeks.
Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmail Baghaei confirmed that the meeting took place, but rejected Washington's claims that they had abandoned their negotiation preconditions.
Tehran's Conditions and Statement on the Strait
Spokesperson Esmail Baghaei emphasized that the purpose of this interaction conducted with Qatari mediation was to convey Iran's demands. Ending the war, lifting the embargoes, and releasing frozen assets were among the conditions.
The Iranian side stated that if the conditions it previously put forward for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz are met, the strait could be opened to navigation within seven days.
