Leaving behind his difficult childhood years in West Baltimore, the pain of his closest friend whom he lost in a shooting, and the injuries he suffered, Kansas State University young defensive player Darien Whitaker Jr. is drawing attention with his performance on the field.
Impressive Performance on the Field
Wearing the Kansas State uniform, 19-year-old sophomore Darien Whitaker Jr. plays an important role in his team's defense with his ambitious nature and effective play in practice.
Standing six-foot-three and weighing 246 pounds, the young edge rusher is making a name for himself with his performance during practices at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.
A Life Away from West Baltimore
Growing up in a two-bedroom apartment with his mother, sister, and brother in the West Baltimore area of Maryland, Whitaker struggled to survive in a difficult environment.
To get away from this challenging environment and pursue his high school education at Boys Town in Nebraska, the young athlete focused on his career and seized a major opportunity in sports.
Deep Wounds of the Past
In March 2020, during a shooting near a shopping center in Rosedale, Whitaker's 13-year-old best friend Rickie Forehand lost his life.
Losing his friend in his arms on the night of the incident, the young athlete held on to his sports career by overcoming the traces of this great tragedy and the difficulties he experienced during his childhood years.
Rise by Overcoming Obstacles
After joining Kansas State, Whitaker experienced unfortunate injuries such as a broken fifth metatarsal bone during his freshman season, leading him to even consider transferring.
Continuing his journey with head coach Collin Klein and defensive coordinator Jordan Peterson, the young player was shifted to the edge rusher position, becoming a key name in his team's defense.
