Google and Google DeepMind Establish Institute to Expand Artificial General Intelligence Debates
A new institute has launched with the aim of bringing together diverse views in the field of artificial general intelligence and approaches from global researchers.
Researchers from Google and Google DeepMind have announced the establishment of the DeepMind Institute to advance discussions on artificial general intelligence and bring forth diverse perspectives.
Purpose of the Institute
Established by researchers within Google and Google DeepMind, the new institute aims to highlight differing views between the global research community and technology companies regarding artificial general intelligence.
Leadership Team
The directorship roles of the new institute are held by DeepMind co-founder Shane Legg, Google executive James Manyika, and Google DeepMind president Demis Hassabis. Shane Legg also serves as the institute's managing editor.
First Article Series
The inaugural collection of essays published by the institute covers four distinct topics ranging from economic policies aimed at managing artificial general intelligence disruptions to human-centric principles.
Transparency and Model Evaluation
Safety researchers Rohin Shah and Anca Dragan argue that artificial intelligence's shrinking window of transparency is not inevitable, while Demis Hassabis proposes the establishment of a US-led standards body to evaluate the most advanced artificial intelligence models.
