King Oyo, 34-year-old ruler of Uganda's Tooro Kingdom, passes away

King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the leader of Uganda's Tooro kingdom and recognized by the Guinness World Records as the world's youngest reigning traditional monarch, has died at the age of 34, according to an announcement by his prime minister.

King Oyo's Life and Accession to the Throne

King Oyo became the king of Tooro in western Uganda in 1995 at the age of just three following his father's death, and he was officially crowned in 2010 when he reached the age of majority at 18.

Having ascended to the throne at an early age, the king ruled over two million people as the 13th monarch of the Tooro kingdom, which was established in the early 19th century, and held significant cultural influence.

News of Death and Official Statements

While the Tooro kingdom did not disclose the cause of death, it was reported that a Ugandan government minister stated he had been critically ill and seeking treatment in the US.

Tooro Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki announced the king's passing, stating that it was an immeasurable loss for the royal family and the people of Tooro, and called for unity.

Lineage Succession and Traditional Process

Prime Minister Akiiki stated that the continuity of the crown is assured and that the king left behind a prince as an heir, whose identity will be officially announced in accordance with Tooro traditions.

Activities Carried Out and Condolence Messages

Throughout his reign, King Oyo advocated for various issues such as youth empowerment, education, climate protection, and HIV/AIDS awareness.

Following his death, the Buganda and Rwenzururu kingdoms, the Federation of Uganda Football Associations, government officials, and numerous figures sent condolence messages.
