During the United Nations desertification conference held in Mongolia, three major land renewal programs carried out to combat land degradation, which threatens the livelihoods of billions of people, were honored with awards.

Objectives of the Conference Held in Mongolia

At the United Nations desertification conference held in Mongolia from August 17-28, the risks posed by land degradation and drought were discussed.

UNCCD President Yasmine Fouad emphasized that investing in nature increases resilience and directly supports basic livelihoods.

Projects Awarded Worldwide

The World Restoration Flagships winners announced within the framework of the conference aim to renew a total of approximately five million hectares of land by 2030.

It is stated that this area is equivalent to nearly seven million football fields and is of critical importance for food and water security.

Brazil's Cerrado Savanna Initiative

The Restoring the Cerrado Savanna Initiative, implemented in Brazil, brings together more than 180 partners across nine states.

The project aims to restore two million hectares of degraded land to its former health by 2030.

Saudi Arabia National Greening Program

Within the scope of the National Greening Program carried out by Saudi Arabia, millions of saplings are being brought together with the soil.

The initiative aims to restore 2.5 million hectares and plant 215 million trees by 2030.

Integrated Resilience Efforts in the Sahel Region

Led by the World Food Programme and implemented in Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania, and Niger, the project targets the Sahel region.

The Sahel Integrated Resilience Initiative carries out efforts to enhance food security and sequester carbon emissions.
