Iceland Visit and Arctic Concerns

Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited Iceland on Tuesday as the first stop of a three-nation NATO tour. This visit coincided with a period of continuing local anxiety over the Trump administration's Arctic policies and intentions.

Rubio described Iceland, a NATO member nation with no standing army, as a "good friend" and showed no indication of any tension between them.

Scope of the Tour and Next Stops

It was noted that Rubio, who is scheduled to return to Washington on Thursday, will also visit Greece and Portugal as part of his three-leg NATO tour.

Speaking to the press on Monday before departing Washington, Rubio did not characterize his mission as a strategic clean-up or clarification, but emphasized that all three countries he is visiting are strong allies.
