Ministry of Health Warning on Excessive Sugar Consumption and Obesity
Making a written statement against the risk of diabetes and excess weight, the ministry advised citizens to acquire healthy eating habits.
In a written statement issued by the Ministry of Health, it was stated that excessive sugar consumption can lead to unhealthy eating habits and an increased risk of diseases such as diabetes and obesity, accompanied by various warnings and recommendations.
Risks of Sugar Consumption
Excessive sugar consumption directly leads to unhealthy eating habits and an increased risk of major diseases such as diabetes. In particular, frequent consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages causes additional energy intake in liquid form, significantly increasing the risk of excess weight and obesity.
Action Plan Activities
Within the scope of the Turkey Healthy Nutrition and Active Life Program, Fight Against Obesity and Physical Activity Action Plan 2025-2028, efforts to instill healthy eating habits across society are being continued with determination.
Health Services and Screenings
Within the framework of primary healthcare services, screenings for excess weight and diabetes are regularly conducted for citizens by family physicians. At Healthy Life Centers, educational and awareness-raising activities are carried out to inform the public.
Food Initiatives for Children
School Food Logo initiatives are being implemented to guide children towards healthy foods and ensure they become conscious consumers. During this process, the importance of involving families and schools alongside individuals is emphasized.
Expert Advice and Recommendations
The ministry recommends that citizens choose water and unsweetened drinks instead of sugar-sweetened beverages. It is also advised to consume whole fruit instead of fruit juice, and to eat sweet and sugary products in small portions and infrequently.
Habit of Reading Labels
It is stated that citizens need to acquire the habit of reading labels in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle and make conscious food choices. Through this, hidden sugar and calorie amounts in packaged products can be easily checked.
