Nepalese Prime Minister Balendra Shah Criticizes Global Order at UN General Assembly
In his debut UN speech, Nepalese Prime Minister Balendra Shah stated that the global order is broken and proposed a new mechanism for the Himalayas.
Nepalese Prime Minister Balendra Shah criticized the contradictions of the current global system in his debut speech at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly and called for climate justice for the countries of the region.
Contradictions of the Global System
Nepalese Prime Minister Balendra Shah emphasized that the global system, which provides seamless logistics for weapons and missiles, falls short in ensuring farmers' access to fuel and fertilizer.
He stated that the current international order has failed regarding food while a flawless logistics infrastructure has been established for wars.
Shared Problems of South Asia
Shah, the 36-year-old youngest head of government, voiced that the climate crisis is not only Nepal's issue but a common concern for all of South Asia.
He noted that countries such as Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka are also suffering from wars they did not start and a climate they did not warm.
Himalayan Climate Resilience Mechanism
Following the Bhotekoshi floods that caused massive destruction in Nepal on August 26, 2026, he drew attention to the importance of regional cooperation.
He shared the proposal to establish the Himalayan Climate Resilience Mechanism, planned under the leadership of Nepal, India, and China, with the global public.
Post-Disaster Support and Report
Prime Minister Shah thanked all international actors, especially neighboring countries India and China, for providing swift and generous aid following the disaster.
According to a National Planning Commission report, it was announced that the floods caused $2.69 billion in losses and $4.77 billion is required for reconstruction.
