A total of 53 confirmed New World screwworm animal cases have been recorded in the United States since June. The latest case was confirmed in a dog in Brewster County, Texas.

Case Distribution and Recent Developments

Fifty-one of the cases were seen in Texas and two in the state of New Mexico. The latest case was officially confirmed on October 2 in a dog in Brewster County, Texas.

Active Cases and Wild Fly Detection

The dog case in Brewster County is currently one of three active animal cases. The other active cases are goats in Crockett County, Texas, and a horse in Grant County, New Mexico.

Additionally, one wild fly detection was recorded during the current outbreak. This fly was found in a surveillance trap in Brewster County on September 25.

Control Methods and Targets

The Department of Agriculture announced that more than 1 billion sterile flies have been released in Texas since February. The agency aims to reach a production of 500 million flies per week by next summer.

Warnings from Authorities and Food Safety

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins stated that progress is being made in containing the outbreak. However, she warned that the threat persists, particularly in Arizona and New Mexico.

Experts stated that this parasite, which feeds on the living tissue of warm-blooded animals, does not pose a food safety threat to meat in the supply chain.
