North Korea fires multiple ballistic missiles, adding to streak of weapons tests

North Korea fired multiple ballistic missiles of various types from an area near its capital, Pyongyang, toward eastern waters. This latest move, confirmed by the South Korean military and Japanese officials, adds another to the series of weapons tests in the region, escalating tensions.

Details of the Missile Tests

South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff spokesperson Jang Do-young announced that North Korea fired multiple ballistic missiles of various types from around the capital, Pyongyang, toward eastern waters.

The official announcement stated that one of the launched missiles traveled a distance of more than approximately 900 kilometers before falling into the sea.

Japan's Detection and Response

Japanese Vice Defense Minister Takashi Koyari stated that his country detected at least two missile launches carried out with a 17-minute interval.

Japanese officials noted that the missiles fell outside the country's exclusive economic zone, and that the second missile followed an irregular flight path.

Regional and Diplomatic Reflections

This latest launch took place immediately after South Korea conducted a flight test of its domestically developed hypersonic weapon.

While South Korea's national security office called on North Korea to immediately halt its ballistic launches, Japan delivered a note of protest through embassies in Beijing.
