Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping met on the margins of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit held in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan. Meeting face-to-face for the first time since May, the two leaders stated that bilateral relations have grown even stronger despite increasing global uncertainties.

Growing Uncertainty in the International Order

Chinese leader Xi Jinping stated that uncertainty and unpredictability in the international order have increased significantly. Emphasizing that bright expectations persist regarding the future of relations between Beijing and Moscow, Xi noted that cooperation has been developing successfully in all fields.

Bishkek Summit and Broad Participation

The two-day summit hosted by Kyrgyzstan coincides with the 25th anniversary of the regional security and economic organization. More than a dozen heads of state, including figures from Iran, India, Pakistan, and Turkey, are attending the meeting.

Economy-Focused Agenda and Other Contacts

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov conveyed that the two leaders mainly discussed economic relations during the meeting and briefly evaluated the war in Ukraine. Meanwhile, Putin also met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss regional issues.

Contacts of Regional Leaders

Many leaders, including Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, are holding various bilateral talks within the scope of the summit. Pezeshkian stated that continuing the war is in the interest of neither Iran nor the region, and that they continue to exert efforts toward a settlement.
