Roughly 70 American Citizens Missing in Flood Disaster on Nepal-China Border
Following the major flood disaster on the Nepal-China border, approximately 70 US citizens remain unaccounted for, while 18 people have been brought to safe areas.
Following the devastating floods in the disaster zone on the Nepal-China border, the US State Department reported that the status of approximately 70 American citizens is not yet clear and search efforts are ongoing.
Missing American Citizens
In a statement issued by the US State Department, it was announced that approximately 70 American citizens in the region have not been heard from since last month's disaster.
Authorities stated that 18 American citizens have been safely rescued so far and that they are in contact with their families.
Search and Rescue Operations
Nepalese authorities reported that search efforts are concentrated particularly in hydroelectric project tunnels and workers are being rescued.
It was stated that teams continue search operations under the rubble to reach people trapped at the Chilime hydroelectric project site.
Death Toll and Missing Persons Balance
It was announced that the number of people who lost their lives in the disaster in Nepal and China's Tibet region reached at least 1,399.
Authorities noted that more than 5,400 people are still missing in the region and search and rescue operations are ongoing.
Travel Warnings and Climate Change
US officials urged citizens not to travel due to ongoing risks of new flash floods and landslides in the region.
The governments of both countries blamed climate change for the glacier collapse that caused the flood.
