Search Operations Launched After Fire Breaks Out on Passenger Ferry in the Philippines
Five people lost their lives and dozens of passengers are missing after flames engulfed a passenger ferry sailing off the coast of Palawan.
A passenger ferry sailing off the coast of Palawan island in the western Philippines caught fire for reasons yet unknown on Wednesday night. Following the incident, five bodies were recovered in extensive search and rescue operations, while teams mobilized to find dozens of missing passengers.
Death Toll and Number of Missing in the Disaster
Authorities confirmed that five people lost their lives in operations conducted after the ferry fire off Palawan. While the number of rescued individuals reached forty-three, light of official lists and available data indicated that the status of over eighty people remains uncertain for now.
Officials conducting search and rescue activities stated that the number of missing persons may vary based on the discrepancy between the passenger manifest and the survivors reached. Search areas are being expanded in the region using drift modeling based on ocean currents.
Condition of the Ferry and Rescue Obstacles
It was announced that the interior of the burned ferry, named M/V June Aster, could not yet be entered due to dense smoke emission, extreme heat, and potential explosion risks. Coast guard teams closely monitor the condition of the vessel and security measures in the surrounding area accompanied by drone imagery.
The burned hull, which drifted away from its initial position throughout the night due to currents and wind, is among the factors further complicating the teams' efforts. If weather conditions permit, aerial support vehicles are planned to be deployed as well.
Route and Passenger Information
It was noted that the ferry that became the scene of the fire departed from the Baseco port in Manila and was en route to the Coron region in Palawan, a popular tourist destination. There were numerous passengers aboard the vessel traveling to this region known for its diving spots and beaches.
In records shared by the coast guard, it was stated that the ship set sail with a total of one hundred seventeen passengers and seventeen crew members. Authorities shared the information that two Chilean citizens were among the forty-three rescued individuals.
Maritime Transport Safety in the Country
Millions of people in the Philippines, which consists of thousands of islands, widely prefer ferries and similar marine vessels for inter-island travel. However, it is known that similar maritime accidents have occurred in the past throughout the country and its safety record is poor.
While past disasters are known to have generally stemmed from overloading, adverse weather conditions, and inadequate compliance with safety regulations, the official investigation into the cause of the latest accident is ongoing from multiple angles.
