One of South Africa's most senior police officers, Shadrack Sibiya, was arrested on Monday and made a brief appearance before a judge in a Johannesburg court on Tuesday. Following prosecutors' arguments that he posed a flight risk, Sibiya was transferred to a prison in the capital, Pretoria, ahead of his bail hearing on September 29.

National Police Deputy Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya, who was previously suspended over allegations of interfering in political assassination investigations, faces charges of rape, human trafficking, encouraging the sexual abuse of a child, and two counts of child exploitation.
Details of the Incidents and Indictment
According to the indictment, Sibiya is accused of raping an 18-year-old woman in May at a hotel in Johannesburg's Sandton business district while she was incapacitated by drugs or alcohol. The grooming of the 16-year-old girl allegedly took place between July 20 and August 3.

Acting National Police Commissioner Puleng Dimpane stated that police officers are obligated to protect women and children, emphasizing that there is no room for any behavior that casts a shadow over this responsibility. Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia strongly condemned the allegations.
