Serbian President Vucic Resigns Ahead of October Elections

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced on Sunday that he was stepping down, cutting short his second and final five-year term. This move has stirred the political arena ahead of early parliamentary elections scheduled for October.

Resignation Decision and Early Election Process

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic formally announced his resignation on Sunday, seven months before the expiration of his term. This decision was revealed while the campaign for early parliamentary elections, planned for October, was underway.

According to the constitution, Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabic will assume the role of acting president until a new leader is elected. The presidential election is expected to be completed within 90 days, with the first round anticipated by December.

Political Background and Potential Goals

Vucic, leader of the Serbian Progressive Party, has played a dominant role in Serbian politics for over a decade. His resignation could pave the way for him to be appointed prime minister if his party forms the new government.

Having previously served as information minister and prime minister, the politician had been holding the largely ceremonial presidency since 2017.

Protests and Relations with the Opposition

While rights groups and opposition parties have accused Vucic's administration of turning authoritarian, officials have denied these claims. The railway station tragedy in the city of Novi Sad had triggered nationwide protests.

Vucic stated in his Sunday announcement that he was granting pardons to 49 individuals, consisting of activists tried or detained in connection with the protests and his own supporters.
