Serbian President Vucic Resigns to Run for Prime Minister
Aleksandar Vucic has stepped down from the presidency to run for prime minister in early elections.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has announced his resignation from office to run as a candidate for prime minister in early parliamentary elections, initiating a new political process.
Background of the Resignation Decision
Serbia's president announced on Sunday that he was stepping down from office, in the shadow of protests spanning nearly two years, to compete for the position of prime minister in early parliamentary elections.
Constitutional Grounds and Election Calendar
Vucic stated that, due to constitutional requirements barring him from running for a third presidential term, he made this decision to lead the right-wing Serbian Progressive Party in the elections scheduled for October 25.
Interim Process and New Elections
Following Vucic's resignation, parliament speaker and former prime minister Ana Brnabic will assume the role of interim president, with the early presidential election planned to take place by the end of the year within the 90-day legal timeframe.
