Bodrum's 22-year memory brought to light with 36,000 hours of recordings
With the project launched in 2003 by the Bodrum Municipality Oral History Working Group, memories of 600 people were listened to and a vast urban archive was created.
As part of the project prepared through 22 years of effort by the Bodrum Municipality Oral History Working Group in Muğla, a comprehensive urban memory archive comprising 36,000 hours of audio and video recordings and 15,000 photographs was created by listening to the memories of 600 people.
Twenty-Two-Year Urban Memory Project
The study initiated in 2003 by the municipality's oral history working group in Bodrum, Muğla, has been transformed into a comprehensive urban memory project as a result of twenty-two years of effort. Within the scope of the project, the social and cultural life of the region, which has a history spanning thousands of years, was recorded.
Comprehensive Archive Study
While the memories of six hundred people were listened to one by one in the project, a massive archive consisting of thirty-six thousand hours of audio and video recordings and fifteen thousand photographs was brought to light. The study covered many subjects such as sponge diving, maritime, boat building, local cuisine, and neighborhood life.
Themes Shedding Light on the Past
Subjects such as family histories, handicrafts, tradesmen, Turkish-Greek relations, and the population exchange were addressed in the study, which features stories belonging to the city's past. This rich content makes a major contribution to understanding Bodrum's social structure.
Presentation at the Nurol Cultural Center
The promotion event for the book 'Words, Faces, Traces Bodrum' and the fifteen-part documentary series was held at the Bodrum Municipality Nurol Cultural Center. Local administrators, members of parliament, historians, and numerous citizens participated in the program.
Statements by Mayor Mandalinci
Bodrum Mayor Tamer Mandalinci drew attention to the importance of walking into the future by knowing the past and emphasized that the project is the product of twenty years of effort. Mandalinci stated that a very valuable archive was created with the testimony of six hundred fellow citizens.
Tribute and Exhibition Events
While working group coordinator Nuran Yüksel stated that the project carries the quality of a tribute to the people of Bodrum, the Old Bodrum Photographs Exhibition, prepared from collector Ali Şengün's archive, was also opened to visitors within the scope of the program.
