The messaging and payment application named Max, which has recently begun to be used by millions of people in Russia, has come to the agenda with comprehensive surveillance and tracking capabilities as a result of forensic investigations.
Development and Usage of the Max App
Developed by VKontakte and likened to the WeChat platform in China, Max combines messaging, banking, and government services under a single roof.
While public sector employees, teachers, and students are forced to use the application, the platform became the country's most used messaging tool this summer.
Findings of the Forensic Investigation
Forensic research led by a team from the University of Michigan, headed by Roya Ensafi, revealed that the application possesses powerful surveillance capabilities.
It was determined that the application can take screenshots without the users' knowledge, access messages and payments, and also inject code into mini-apps.
Digital Authoritarianism and Future Concerns
While political elites use the Max app on secondary phones, they prefer different platforms for private communication.
