Tennessee Prison Chief Resigns After Failed Execution

Tennessee Department of Correction Commissioner Frank Strada announced he will step down this month following the failed execution attempt of inmate Christa Pike. Following the incident, all executions in the state have been suspended until the end of the year.

Failed Execution Attempt

The lethal injection execution attempt carried out on Wednesday resulted in failure, and inmate Christa Pike was hospitalized. In a court filing by her attorneys, it was stated that Pike was unconscious and placed on a ventilator.

Execution Decision from the Governor's Office

This development was recorded as the second failed execution in the state during the year. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee announced that following these events, death penalty executions have been halted for the remainder of 2026.

Resignation of the Commissioner

Governor Lee announced that Tennessee Department of Correction Commissioner Frank Strada has resigned and will step down this month. An independent review has been ordered regarding the incident that took place at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville.

Protocol and Review Process

In a statement, Strada expressed his belief that his staff acted in accordance with procedures, but stated that stepping aside while the independent review is underway is in the public interest. The Governor's office announced that an interim commissioner will be appointed in the coming days.

Inmate's Health Status and Background

Pike's attorneys alleged that authorities ignored warnings regarding vein issues and a blood disorder. The fifty-year-old inmate was found guilty of first-degree murder for killing Colleen Slemmer in 1995.

Doctors' Intervention

Her attorneys stated on Friday that doctors were working to clear the pentobarbital drug from her system and save her life.
