Five people were detained in an operation conducted upon a suspicious vehicle report near the RAF Fairford base in the UK.
British police detained five people on explosives and terrorism charges following a report about suspicious vans heading towards the RAF Fairford air base used by the US.
Suspicious Vehicle Report Near the Base
British counter-terrorism detectives reported receiving a tip-off in the early hours about three suspicious vehicles heading towards the RAF Fairford air base in the west of the country. Armed police teams detained five individuals at the scene on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act, and security measures were stepped up in the area.
Statement from Donald Trump and Investigation
US President Donald Trump stated that the captured suspects intended to cause massive damage and had been monitored for a long time by British and US authorities. British officials stated that they were in the early stages of the investigation into the incident and joint efforts were ongoing.
Security Measures and Evacuation of Local Residents
Police teams established a 400-meter security cordon around the base while bomb disposal squads inspected the vans. Local residents in 85 households in a nearby village were evacuated as a precaution, and patrols were conducted in the area.
Potential Threat Sources and Scope of the Investigation
A source close to the investigation stated that an Iran-linked motivation is being evaluated as the strongest possibility, but a Russian sabotage operation or an Islamist plot is also being focused on. The security level has also been raised at certain other US bases in the UK.
