TURKSOFA-2 Study Reveals the Reality of Sepsis in Intensive Care Units

According to the Turkish Society of Intensive Care research, a significant portion of patients in intensive care units in Turkey suffer from sepsis, and half of these cases lose their lives within a month.

The TURKSOFA-2 study by the Turkish Society of Intensive Care Data Science Working Group revealed that one out of every five patients in intensive care units across Turkey has sepsis, and one out of every two patients diagnosed with sepsis loses their life within thirty days.

Scope and General Findings of the Research

As part of World Sepsis Day events, the results of the TURKSOFA-2 study were shared with the public at a meeting supported by Global Health Services Company Vantive.

In the multi-center study covering 44 provinces and 7 regions of Turkey, 3,368 patients in 143 intensive care units were evaluated in detail.

Mortality Rates in Sepsis Patients

Turkish Society of Intensive Care President Prof. Dr. Fethi Gül announced that approximately 39 percent of intensive care patients have sepsis.

It was reported that the 30-day mortality rate was measured at 50.5 percent in sepsis patients, while this rate was at the level of 24.5 percent in non-sepsis patients.

Infection Sources and Clinical Problems

Stating that sepsis is at the forefront of preventable deaths, Prof. Dr. Fethi Gül expressed that 50.7 percent of infections originate from the lungs.

The increasing antimicrobial resistance becoming a serious problem in modern clinical practices was also among the highlighted topics at the meeting.

Early Diagnosis and Awareness Events

Vantive Turkey Deputy General Manager Volkan Doğan drew attention to the critical importance of early diagnosis and innovative health technologies in sepsis treatment.

Within the scope of the program, a special walk was held at the Istanbul Kalamış Coastal Track to create public awareness against sepsis.
