Two Friends Killed After Being Struck by Subway Train in New York
A woman who wanted to help her friend who fell onto the tracks at a New York subway station and her companion lost their lives after being struck by an oncoming train.
In an accident at a subway station in lower Manhattan, New York, two 24-year-old friends lost their lives at the scene after being struck by an approaching train while trying to help someone who had fallen onto the tracks.
What Happened During the Accident
According to reports in the US press, the incident took place at the Spring Street subway station in lower Manhattan, New York.
After one of the two friends fell onto the tracks and the other jumped from the platform to help, an oncoming subway train struck both young individuals.
Identification of the Victims
The 24-year-old individuals who lost their lives in the accident were identified as New Jersey residents Malaika Chitre and Navam Kaul.
Both youths had previously studied together at Rutgers University and subsequently stepped into their careers.
Police and Rescue Operations
Police units reported receiving a call around 3:14 AM on Sunday stating that the train was unable to stop in time and was involved in the accident.
Approximately 100 passengers who were on the train at the time of the incident were safely evacuated to the platform, and the lifeless bodies of the victims were recovered from under the train.
University and Career Backgrounds
Rutgers University officials shared their deep sorrow with the public over the tragic deaths of their former students.
It was learned that Chitre worked as an operations specialist at Acadia Pharmaceuticals, while Kaul worked as a financial data analyst at Bloomberg.
