Humanities students get real-world experience through summer programs

Last summer in California, two university programs enabled 26 UC Santa Cruz humanities students to gain immersive work experience in fields such as media, local government, museums, and publishing.

Humanities Students in the Field

The Summer Humanities EXCEL and HumLaunch programs were launched to transform humanities education into professional experience.

Details of the EXCEL Program

Within the scope of the EXCEL program, students participated in an academic course alongside a 10-week project-based internship process.

Participants worked at host organizations for approximately 25 hours per week, kept field notes, and received scholarship support.

Supported Organizations

The institutions where internships took place included various museums, publishing houses, and local government units.

The HumLaunch Initiative

The HumLaunch program connected students with alumni mentors, providing short-term job shadowing and project placements.
