UN Refugee Chief Barham Salih Calls on Security Council

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Barham Salih has called on the Security Council to end conflicts so that more than 117 million displaced people can return to their homes.

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Barham Salih urged divided nations to focus on ending conflicts and crises. He stated that this would prevent more than 117 million displaced people from remaining refugees across generations in foreign countries.

Responsibility for Peace

Delivering his first address to the United Nations Security Council following his election in December, Barham Salih stated that the 15 members bear a unique responsibility in making peace possible. He emphasized that humanitarian workers deal with the consequences of conflicts but cannot create peace.

Global Crisis Hotspots

Salih highlighted major displacement crises worldwide, including recent escalations in Sudan, Congo, Ukraine, Western Sahara, and Yemen. He reiterated the goal of halving long-term displacement dependent on humanitarian aid by 2035.
