The University of Michigan Ann Arbor campus announced that it dropped from twentieth to twenty-fifth place in the 2027 national university rankings published by U.S. News & World Report.

Change in Overall Rankings

The University of Michigan Ann Arbor campus experienced a drop out of the top 20 in U.S. News & World Report's best national universities ranking. Having ranked twentieth last year, the higher education institution fell to the twenty-fifth spot in the new list.

Position Among Public Universities

Despite the decline in the overall list, the university managed to maintain its third-place title in the public universities category. Institutional officials stated that they are proud to be one of the top public universities.

Faculty and Program Rankings

While the Ross School of Business and the School of Nursing maintained their fourth and sixth positions respectively, the College of Engineering dropped one spot to sixth place. The university's learning communities ranked second, and study abroad programs ranked eighth.

Ranking Criteria and Evaluations

While student outcomes carry a major weight in the U.S. News methodology, enrollment rates, graduation rates, and post-graduation success hold a combined impact of more than fifty percent. Meanwhile, the university administration expressed the view that overall rankings do not reflect the institution's core goals.
