US Statement Regarding India's Warning on Russia Sanctions
The US State Department announced that they have noted India's concerns regarding the sanctions law targeting Russia and Iran, and that there is no tension between the two countries.
The US has taken into consideration the warnings expressed by India regarding bilateral relations following the adoption of the sanctions law targeting Russia and Iran. The Washington administration stated that it understands India's reaction within the framework of domestic political balances and that this situation has not caused any rift in relations.
Sanctions Law and India's Situation
The newly adopted law brings the risk of imposing customs tariffs of up to 100% for countries importing Russian energy. Since India ranks among the top five importers of Russian energy, it has the potential to be directly affected by this regulation.
Diplomatic Contacts and Exemption Authority
US State Department officials recalled that the law grants President Donald Trump broad national security waiver authority. However, no clear statement was made regarding whether a specific exemption would be provided to India.
The issue was also brought up during discussions between Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The US side emphasized that they could support India in diversifying its energy sources.
Future Plans and Visit Schedule
While stating that diplomatic traffic between the two countries will continue, it was announced that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will pay a second visit to India within the month of October.
