Gathered at the European Health Forum held in Austria, experts reported that hospitals and health systems are not sufficiently prepared for a potential war in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The Effects of War at the European Health Forum

At the European Health Forum held in the Austrian town of Bad Hofgastein, the risks facing health systems were comprehensively addressed. Henriette Neumeyer, President of the European Hospital and Healthcare Federation, drew attention to the effects of the war in Ukraine.

Shortcomings in Countries Like Germany and the Netherlands

Expressing that there are distinct differences between the preparedness levels of countries, Henriette Neumeyer stated that research shows even strong health systems like those in Germany and Holland harbor significant deficiencies.

Attacks on Health Infrastructure in Ukraine

Jarno Habicht, the World Health Organization's representative in Ukraine, conveyed that the war has put the health system through a severe test. WHO has recorded approximately 3,500 attacks on health services in Ukraine, including primary care centers, hospitals, and ambulances.

Condition of Supply Chains and Drug Warehouses

Jarno Habicht emphasized that in recent months, medical warehouses have been destroyed and, consequently, supply chains have been severely disrupted. Habicht warned that attacks on civilian infrastructure would increase the need for humanitarian aid.

Measures to Be Taken for Crisis Resilience

Speaking at the forum, experts stated that drug and medical supply chains must be strengthened in order to increase the resilience of health systems against crises. It was also emphasized that staff shortages should be addressed and international cooperation increased.

New Threats and Future Concerns

Cyberattacks and the spread of disinformation were also cited among serious threats to health systems. Along with long appointment wait times across Europe, staff shortages, and rising costs, concerns regarding the sustainability of services during crises were voiced.
