Organized by the Vietnam Institute of Traditional Medicine in Hanoi, the workshop addressed the country's medicinal plant potential, the challenges faced, and critical roles in developing the sector.

The Importance of Traditional Medicine in Healthcare

Leveraging the strengths of traditional medicine provides a practical solution to contribute to preserving the essence of national medicine while improving the quality of healthcare services. Through this, the value of medicinal plants is enhanced within the primary healthcare system.

Details of the Workshop in Hanoi

Associate Professor Nguyen Tuan Hung, Director of the Vietnam Institute of Traditional Medicine, made important remarks at the workshop held in Hanoi on developing clean medicinal plants and extracting the value of traditional medicine from sustainable agriculture.

Biodiversity and World Ranking

According to its exceptional biodiversity potential, Vietnam ranks third in the world with more than 5,117 medicinal plant and mushroom species, 408 animal species, 52 seaweed species, and 75 mineral species.

Current Sectoral Challenges

Due to challenges such as overexploitation, lack of control, and fragmented, small-scale cultivation areas, domestic supply meets only 25-30 percent of demand, and products are mostly sold in raw form.

The Role of Technology for the Sector

Experts state that the application of science, technology, digital transformation, and biotechnology is essential to increase the value of medicinal plants, preserve genetic resources, and raise added value.
