AI can find serious vulnerabilities at unprecedented speed. Can defenders keep up?

According to data shared by IBM X-Force, a record-breaking surge was recorded in 2026 in vulnerability disclosures targeting major software vendors and driven by AI-powered platforms.

Massive Increase in the Number of Vulnerabilities

Throughout 2026, a dramatic climb was observed in publicly disclosed security vulnerabilities within the systems of major software vendors such as Microsoft, Oracle, Google Chrome, and Apache.

During the period between January and September, CVE numbers showed a 578 percent increase compared to the same period of the previous year.

The Impact of Artificial Intelligence Platforms

A report published by Unit 42 in August 2026 showcased the capabilities of an autonomous vulnerability discovery platform named NOVA.

Said platform managed to detect more than 14,000 unknown vulnerabilities in approximately 4,000 open-source projects in a short span of just two months.

The Scale of Critical Vulnerabilities

Analyses conducted by X-Force revealed that more than half of these AI-sourced vulnerabilities were classified as high or critical severity.

The fact that a large portion of the detected vulnerabilities is remotely accessible and supports code execution increases the pressure on system administrators.

The Challenge of Defense and Prioritization

The rapid detection of such security vulnerabilities has made patch management and prioritization processes, rather than the discovery process, the most significant challenge for organizations.
