Alphabet and Microsoft's Artificial Intelligence Partnerships and Earnings
Alphabet and Microsoft reported high revenue growth in the shadow of partnerships and competition with AI ventures such as Anthropic and OpenAI.
Alphabet and Microsoft reported their latest financial quarter results within the framework of complex cooperation and competition networks they established with laboratories in the field of artificial intelligence. While both technology giants recorded massive increases in cloud and server revenues, they continue to experience costs tied to joint research and partnership structures.
Alphabet announced that its cloud revenue doubled year-over-year in the third quarter to reach $31 billion, while its total revenue increased by 25 percent to $127.6 billion. The company reported $9 billion in negative free cash flow as losses tied to shared AI R&D activities approached $8 billion. In the IPO prospectus of Claude maker Anthropic, Google appeared 109 times as a customer, chip supplier, cloud provider, and competitor.
Microsoft's Azure unit sales increased by 48 percent in the three-month period ending September 30 to reach $33.2 billion. While the company's total quarterly revenue rose 19 percent compared to the previous year to $92.3 billion, $18 billion in free cash flow was generated. Microsoft and OpenAI revised their partnership agreements last year, and in April they relaxed them to make it easier for OpenAI to work with other partners while placing a cap on Microsoft's revenue share payments.
