What is artificial general intelligence – and is it already here?

OpenAI President Greg Brockman stated that the advanced model GPT-6 Astra could be the beginning of the artificial general intelligence (AGI) era. There are differing views among experts in the industry regarding the definition of AGI and whether this stage has been reached.

OpenAI defines the concept of AGI as an artificial intelligence system that outperforms humans in most digital and cognitive tasks that humans can do. While Google DeepMind founder Demis Hassabis defines AGI as the ability to perform almost any cognitive task that humans can do, Meta's former chief AI scientist Yann LeCun argues that the term is flawed.

OpenAI President Greg Brockman stated at a closed press briefing in September that he believes it is at hand. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for slowing down rapid development, drawing attention to the potential risks of artificial intelligence agents, and this view was also supported by Sam Altman and Elon Musk.
