Brent Crude at Four-Week High Amid Geopolitical Risks
As geopolitical risks along the Middle East and Ukraine fronts trigger supply concerns, Brent crude prices climbed above $107, reaching a four-week peak.
In global oil markets, conflicts in the Middle East and developments on the Russia-Ukraine front have heightened concerns over supply security, pushing the barrel price of Brent crude to a four-week peak of $107.33 at the beginning of the week.
Brent Crude at Four-Week Peak
While prices have followed an upward trajectory in oil markets due to the impact of geopolitical risks, the barrel price of Brent crude tested a four-week peak of $107.33 at the start of the week. Although a partial pullback occurred in October 13 trading following statements that Russia could increase its diesel exports, oil continued to maintain its strong outlook above $105.
Escalating Conflicts in the Middle East
Developments threatening energy infrastructure and maritime transport in the Middle East have been among the main factors driving up oil prices. Intensifying Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia and uncertainties regarding the Riyadh administration's potential response have escalated tensions in the region. It was reported that Houthi attacks targeting the King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on October 11 and 12 resulted in casualties.
Maritime Transport and Shipment Risks
The Houthis' threats against Saudi energy infrastructure and facilities along the Red Sea coast are being closely monitored by the market. It is stated that disruptions to maritime transport around the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait could alter tanker routes and increase freight and insurance costs. Along with the risks in the Strait of Hormuz, this situation raises concerns about shipment bottlenecks.
Energy Infrastructure and Ceasefire Discussions
Ceasefire initiatives regarding the cessation of attacks on energy infrastructure between Russia and Ukraine constitute another agenda item for the market. US President Donald Trump announced that the two countries had agreed to halt attacks on energy facilities. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that they had seen no concrete sign of Russia accepting the ceasefire and that an energy facility in Kharkiv had been targeted.
Diesel Exports and Price Trends
One of the factors supporting the short-term pullback in oil prices was statements indicating that Russia could increase its diesel exports. The US administration's temporary lifting of certain sanctions on Russian exports was evaluated as a development that could alleviate the supply squeeze in the diesel market. In international futures markets, a barrel of Brent crude was trading at $105.37, while the November futures barrel price for West Texas Intermediate crude was determined at $92.46.
