Saudi Arabia has launched an investigation to determine why air defense systems failed to intercept the missiles in an attack by Iran-backed Houthis on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, which resulted in at least 13 deaths and over 300 injuries.

Details of the Airport Attack

It was stated that the attack, carried out by Iran-backed Yemeni Houthis, targeted King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh with missiles and drones that traveled a distance of more than 1,000 kilometers.

Regional officials stated that the Houthis first launched numerous drones to overwhelm defense systems, followed by cruise and ballistic missiles.

Scope of the Investigation

Within the scope of the initiated investigation, authorities are examining why the air defense systems failed to detect the attack earlier and provide early warning.

It was reported that the Houthis possess ballistic missiles equipped with advanced maneuverable warheads, which pose a challenge to defense systems like the Patriot.

Regional Conflicts and Coalition's Response

The Saudi-led coalition announced on Monday that two ballistic missiles launched toward Riyadh were intercepted in mid-air, with at least three explosions heard across the city.

Civil defense authorities subsequently announced that the danger had passed, while Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdul Aziz bin Salman delivered a speech at the World Petroleum Congress in Riyadh.
