Call for Artificial Intelligence and a Moral Compass at the G20 Interfaith Forum
Speaking at the G20 Interfaith Forum in Salt Lake City, Elder Gerrit W. Gong stated that artificial intelligence must be shaped by human values and moral principles.
Elder Gerrit W. Gong of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints stated at the G20 Interfaith Forum held in Salt Lake City that faith communities can provide moral guidance so that artificial intelligence serves the common good of humanity.
The G20 Interfaith Forum, held for the first time in the United States in Salt Lake City, brought together religious leaders, academics, and public officials from around the world under the theme 'Resilient Hope, Shared Future.' Speaking at the forum, Elder Gerrit W. Gong emphasized that artificial intelligence should be guided not only by technological capacity, but also by enduring moral values and human dignity.
Stating that 'artificial intelligence will not reach its full potential unless we make it as morally good as we make it powerful,' Elder Gong indicated that people, not technology, should shape the future. He also touched upon consortium efforts evaluating faith and ethics, as well as the Church's principles regarding the use of artificial intelligence, which include spiritual connection, transparency, privacy, and accountability.
