Could AI give Colorado more warning before damaging hailstorms?

Colorado State University (CSU) researchers are working on artificial intelligence models to predict frequently seen and damaging hailstorms in the region. The project aims to combine two separate systems that calculate hail risk across different timeframes.

Stating that hail poses a major problem in Colorado, CSU Associate Professor Kristen Rasmussen noted that this phenomenon contributes between 25 and 55 percent of home insurance claims in the state. The research team is integrating two artificial intelligence models to forecast storm risks across different time intervals. The Hail Storm Scope model, which can make predictions up to two hours in advance using radar data, is being combined with the CSU Machine Learning Probabilities model, which can predict the probability of severe storms and hail up to eight days in advance.
