Columbia Law School Launches Artificial Intelligence Initiative
Columbia Law School has launched the AI @ CLS initiative to integrate artificial intelligence into legal education and practice.
Columbia Law School has launched a comprehensive artificial intelligence initiative backed by a five-year partnership support to strengthen the place of AI in legal education and practice.
Artificial Intelligence Initiative and Its Objectives
Columbia Law School has launched the AI @ CLS initiative to ensure that students can use these technologies responsibly, as AI tools become part of the daily work of legal professionals. The initiative aims to provide foundational knowledge to students and advance field-defining research.
Three Core Components of the Initiative
According to Dean Daniel Abebe, the initiative consists of three main components: building skills through courses, practical training, and extracurricular programs; expanding knowledge with new faculty members; and examining the impacts of artificial intelligence on democracy and justice.
Support and Partnership Structure
This initiative is supported by a five-year commitment from the law firm Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison, led by Chair of the Board of Directors Scott A. Barshay. The partnership contributes to curriculum development and faculty research.
Policies and Academic Developments
In line with the recommendations of a working group, the faculty published an AI policy for the 2026-2027 academic year. Additionally, new elective courses are being added, and Elliott Ash will join as a visiting researcher in January 2027.
