Comprehensive Artificial Intelligence Initiative and New Facility Investment from Rice University
Rice University has launched a massive initiative covering the recruitment of 75 new faculty members in artificial intelligence, The Arc research center, and expanded academic programs.
Rice University has launched a comprehensive, university-wide artificial intelligence initiative aimed at becoming a global leader in AI, encompassing faculty recruitment, new research facilities, and academic programs.
AI-Focused Academic Faculty Recruitment
Rice University is conducting a comprehensive academic recruitment process to bring in a total of 75 interdisciplinary faculty members. Having appointed 35 AI-focused faculty members in recent years, the university has now crossed the halfway mark in this process.
The Arc New Research Center in the Ion District
To strengthen its artificial intelligence infrastructure, the university is establishing a modern research and innovation facility named The Arc in the Ion District. Within this approximately 200,000-square-foot center, Rice University will occupy 80,000 square feet of office and laboratory space.
Strategic Plan and Responsible AI Priority
President Reginald DesRoches stated that these investments in artificial intelligence lie at the center of the university's 10-year strategic plan. The initiative aims to advance responsible AI research and increase societal impact.
Four Strategic Clusters and Research Areas
New faculty members will be hired in a coordinated manner across four areas: foundational AI, AI for health, AI for energy and environment, and society and ethics. The Ken Kennedy Institute and Rice AI Hub play a central role in this process.
