The Center for Countering Disinformation (DMM) announced that malicious actors, taking advantage of the social media age verification regulation that will enter into force as of November 1, are trying to defraud citizens through fake links and messages.

In the statement made by DMM, it was stated that SMS, e-mail and social media links aiming to create panic, such as "Your account will be closed" or "Verify your age immediately", should not be trusted. Within the scope of the new regulation, age verification procedures will be carried out only with a token to be obtained via the e-Government Gateway and no identity information will be transferred to social media platforms.

While the application is mandatory only for newly opened accounts as of November 1, the verification process for existing accounts will continue until March 31, 2027. Citizens were asked to use only the official "turkiye.gov.tr" address or the e-Government mobile application to protect themselves from fraud attempts, not to click on suspicious redirect links and not to share their personal data with anyone.
