Energy demand of AI data centers sparks innovation in the US electrical grid
The surging energy demand of artificial intelligence data centers is accelerating the development of new software and superconducting infrastructure technologies to modernize the aging US power grid.
Industry experts gathering at the TechCrunch Disrupt event evaluated the pressure exerted by AI-driven energy demand on the US electrical grid and how this situation acts as a catalyst for technological innovations.
With the widespread adoption of artificial intelligence technologies, the massive increase in energy consumption by data centers is straining the existing U.S. electrical infrastructure. Experts from organizations such as WeaveGrid, Veir, and Rewiring America stated that this situation creates new opportunities for grid modernization.
Apoorv Bhargava of WeaveGrid emphasized the need for advanced load regulation software to manage new variables such as renewable energy, electric vehicles, and data centers. Meanwhile, Veir is working on superconducting power lines that can transmit energy five times farther than traditional cables while taking up 20 times less space. Veir recently secured $110 million in Series C funding for its work in this area.
Kristin Eberhard of Rewiring America stated that the urgency created by artificial intelligence is increasing industries' willingness to adopt new transmission and power solutions.
