Global Climate and Health Alliance Releases 2026 NDC Scorecard Report
A new report by the Global Climate and Health Alliance, covering 132 countries, reveals that while major polluting economies include health rhetoric in their climate plans, they continue to maintain fossil fuel dependency and their emission targets remain insufficient.
The Global Climate and Health Alliance has published its 2026 Scorecard report, evaluating the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) of 132 countries. The analysis, conducted across eight criteria including climate-related health impacts, air pollution, and just transition, identified a significant discrepancy between the health rhetoric of high-emission countries and their concrete emission reduction targets.
In the evaluation system, Colombia leads the list with 29 points out of 32, followed by Nigeria in second place with 25 points, and Cambodia in third with 24 points. The European Union ranked 12th in the overall standings. Alliance official Jess Beagley emphasized that governments cannot claim to prioritize health without addressing their dependence on fossil fuels.
The report revealed that health ministries were involved in the preparation process of national climate plans in only 15 percent of the countries examined. The study highlights concrete health crises such as deaths in Nepal, the risk of hunger in Africa, and heatwaves in Europe, reminding that wealthy countries must reduce their emissions faster and provide financial support to developing economies.
