High school students conduct AI-supported TV series and violence research
Research conducted by Kabataş High School students using artificial intelligence revealed that approximately one-third of rewatched scenes in popular Turkish TV series contain elements of violence.
A scientific research project prepared with artificial intelligence support by Kabataş High School students Bora Candan and Onur Yıldırım revealed that nearly one-third of the most rewatched scenes in popular Turkish television series contain elements of violence against women. Published in an international journal, this comprehensive project has been deemed worthy of various awards.
Project Published in an International Journal
Prepared by Kabataş High School students Bora Candan and Onur Yıldırım under the guidance of philosophy teacher Özgür Aydemir, the research was published in June 2026 in the International Journal of Social Science Research.
Titled Sociological Analysis of Violence Against Women in Turkish Society, the study succeeded in ranking among nearly a thousand projects at the 10th Üsküdar University Science and Idea Festival.
Artificial Intelligence and Media Analysis Method
Combining sociology, statistics, and artificial intelligence, the research identified popular TV series scenes by utilizing YouTube's data regarding moments most rewound and rewatched by users.
Ninety-second segments of the selected scenes were converted into text with the help of artificial intelligence and classified in terms of psychological, physical, and economic violence elements.
Manual Verification in the TV Series Yalı Çapkını
In manual verification performed on 108 scenes selected from the first 20 episodes of the TV series Yalı Çapkını, the accuracy rate of the artificial intelligence-supported classification system was measured at 89 percent.
During this process examining the most rewatched scenes of four popular television series, it was determined that approximately one-third of the scenes contained elements of violence against women.
Awareness Scale on Teachers
In the second part of the research, a 15-item Violence Against Women Scale was developed to measure teachers' awareness of violence against women.
Data obtained from the scale administered to 109 randomly selected teachers in the Beşiktaş district with the permission of the Ministry of National Education were analyzed using the SPSS 27 program.
Teacher Awareness and Demographic Findings
According to the research results, it was observed that teachers generally have a high awareness of violence against women, and female teachers are more sensitive against violence.
It was determined that male teachers are more influenced by television series, and furthermore, as professional seniority increases, the level of being influenced by the series rises while sensitivities regarding violence decrease.
Expert Support and Proposed Solutions
The artificial intelligence methodology of the research was shaped in line with interviews conducted with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Şebnem Özdemir, demonstrating the effective use of artificial intelligence in analyzing social problems.
The young researchers recommended that restrictions be imposed on scenes of violence in TV series, artificial intelligence-supported content audits be expanded, and training be provided to screenwriters.
