UK expands military support for Saudi Arabia against Houthis with ‘defensive’ air patrols

The UK has decided to increase its military support to Saudi Arabia against missile and drone attacks by Yemen-based Houthi rebels. Defense Secretary Wes Streeting stated that Royal Air Force (RAF) Typhoon jets will conduct defensive counter-air operations over Saudi Arabia, protecting cities, the civilian population, and critical infrastructure from missiles within this scope.

Defense Secretary Wes Streeting stated that British fighter jets will target airborne missiles and drones but will not launch attacks against Houthi targets on the ground. According to the announcement, the London government will also send a military transport aircraft and an unspecified number of military advisors to Saudi Arabia. This decision follows the UK's decision last month to provide aerial refueling support to Saudi aircraft, and this mission has been extended for another 90 days.

It was reported that Egypt will also provide military assistance to protect Saudi Arabia's security and stability, deploying air defense systems and aircraft. Meanwhile, British Defense Secretary Streeting emphasized in a written statement submitted to parliament that there is no long-term military solution to the conflict and that they continue to support the UN-led political process for lasting peace.
