How do institutions embed AI literacy in higher education?

Oxford University Press (OUP) has developed a new artificial intelligence literacy module to support students and instructors in higher education in using generative artificial intelligence responsibly.

According to data from the Higher Education Policy Institute and the Digital Education Council, while the use of artificial intelligence among university students has reached nearly universal levels, there is a significant disconnect regarding responsible application and critical understanding. Developed by Dr. Anand Rao from the University of Mary Washington and Stefan Bauschard from Union College, the module consists of interactive videos and assessments. The content covers topics such as artificial intelligence fundamentals, academic integrity, risks like misinformation, critical thinking, and prompt engineering.

Offered on platforms such as Oxford Insight and Oxford Learning Link, this resource aims to assist instructors who feel unprepared to lead artificial intelligence integration. It is intended to help close the skills gap revealed by data from the National Association of Colleges and Employers, which shows that 51 percent of recent graduates do not actively develop artificial intelligence skills despite employer demand.
