Preparation for Lawsuit Against Meta from Turkey and Under-15 Social Media Limit
With statements from Emine Erdoğan and Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin, a social media ban for children under 15 and a legal process against Meta have come to the agenda for children's digital safety.
While Turkey has decided to restrict social media access for children under 15 to ensure their safety in the digital world, Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin announced that the country is preparing to file a lawsuit against Meta.
Emine Erdoğan, wife of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, stated at the opening of the İMKON Rehabilitation Center in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, that with the 'Convention on Children's Rights in the Digital World', access to social media for children under 15 is restricted and sanctions such as age verification and parental controls are imposed on platforms. Emphasizing that protecting the family institution is a priority, Emine Erdoğan stated that 2025 has been declared the Year of the Family and the 2026-2035 period has been designated as the 'Family and Population Decade'.
Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin, in statements made upon his return from a visit to the United Arab Emirates, stated that children being exposed to age-inappropriate content negatively affects their development and announced that they plan to sue Meta. Recalling that they banned the use of mobile phones in schools and warned students, Tekin pointed out that social media companies should also assume responsibility outside of school, citing similar legal processes in the USA and the European Union as examples.
