Statement from Mersin Bar Association on Social Media Regulation Discussions
Following claims that the new regulation introducing age limits on social media would profile all citizens, a statement came from the Mersin Bar Association.
While the new regulation banning social media for those under 15 and restricting it for those aged 15-18 has sparked discussions, Lawyer Ramazan Demir, a member of the Mersin Bar Association KVKK Commission, stated that the arrangement aims to uphold the best interests of children.
The new regulation, which bans social media for those under 15 and restricts it for those aged 15-18, has brought discussions along with it. Responding to concerns that all citizens would be profiled, Lawyer Ramazan Demir, a member of the Mersin Bar Association KVKK Commission, said that the regulation solely serves the best interests of children. Within the scope of the law entering into force on November 1, social media accounts of those under 15 will be closed, while strict rules are coming regarding the usage by youth aged 15-18.
Emphasizing the importance of the law, Lawyer Ramazan Demir stated that it has been evaluated incorrectly by society and that the law covers only those under 18. Demir expressed that the regulation was made to prevent children from becoming tools in crimes or direct products of crime on digital platforms. He noted that claims regarding adults being obligated to report their social media accounts through e-Government do not reflect the truth, and that the regulation contains provisions exclusively concerning children.
