Fields Medal-winning UC Berkeley professor ends graded homework due to AI cheating — says in-person exams are the only solution left to widespread AI use

Renowned mathematician Richard Borcherds, working within UC Berkeley, announced that he will no longer give graded homework assignments in his classes following the spread of AI-assisted cheating incidents.

Borcherds stated that it has become almost impossible to distinguish AI-generated content from a student's own work in student assignments. Expressing that this situation penalizes honest students and encourages the use of artificial intelligence, the professor announced that he will now conduct academic evaluations only through in-person exams where electronic devices are prohibited.

Emphasizing that online exams have also become inefficient for similar reasons, Borcherds stated that he observed average grades in these exams rising suspiciously due to the use of artificial intelligence. The professor expressed that grading responses prepared with artificial intelligence is a waste of both time and resources.
