Amid escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, expectations of a potential interest rate hike by the U.S. Federal Reserve, and weakness in the eurozone, the dollar index has reached an 18-month peak.

Middle East Tension and Energy Markets

While escalating tensions in the Middle East threaten energy supply, an increase in attacks by the Houthis in Yemen and their targeting of oil tankers have deepened market concerns. Brent crude oil futures for December reaching $105 per barrel stood out as one of the main factors fueling global inflation risks.

Fed Policies and Interest Rate Expectations

These developments strengthened forecasts that the Fed might continue its monetary tightening cycle in December. Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack and Fed Governor Christopher Waller indicated that a restrictive policy stance and a policy rate hike in December could be on the agenda to curb inflation.

Euro Weakness and Bond Yields

Fiscal concerns in France and weakness in the eurozone pulled the euro/dollar parity down to the 1.11 level, declining to its lowest point in approximately 17 months. The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield remaining above 5% was also among the key factors that increased the dollar's appeal to investors.

Dollar Index Levels

The dollar index, which measures the value of the U.S. dollar against six major currencies, climbed to 102.6 with the combination of all these factors, marking its highest level since April 2025, and was trading at 102.3 as of 11:40 AM.
