GOP and Dem lawmakers accuse Trump of ‘surrender’ to Putin after prez waived sanctions

Bipartisan US lawmakers sharply criticized President Trump's decision to suspend Russia sanctions, describing the move as a "surrender" to Vladimir Putin. Immediately following the decision, Russian forces targeted Ukraine's energy infrastructure with hundreds of drones and missiles.

President Trump's late-night decision to sign a waiver on Russia sanctions was met with a bipartisan backlash in Washington. Former Senator Thom Tillis stated in a post on the X platform that the administration bowing to a Russian dictator who invaded Ukraine and targets civilians is unacceptable and irresponsible.

Trump signed the Lindsey O. Graham 2026 Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act last month. The legislation authorizes financial sanctions on the Russian economy while also allowing for exemptions on national security grounds.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the suspension of sanctions as "unfortunate" while announcing that Russian forces targeted energy infrastructure with drones and ballistic missiles. It was reported that these attacks left over a million people without electricity and resulted in eight deaths. Lawmakers from both parties, including Senator Richard Blumenthal and Representative Don Beyer, stated that this decision undermined efforts to punish Russia.
