AI BioDesign Accelerator Established Combining Artificial Intelligence and Experimental Biology
The Allen Institute, University of Washington, and Fred Hutch Cancer Center have launched the AI BioDesign accelerator, powered by artificial intelligence, to decode nature's design rules.
Established through a partnership between the Allen Institute, University of Washington, and Fred Hutch Cancer Center, the AI BioDesign accelerator aims to develop novel biological solutions for health and environmental challenges by combining artificial intelligence, experimental biology, and open science.
Scope of the New Collaboration
AI BioDesign was established to examine nature's unexplored design space by bringing together artificial intelligence, large-scale experiments, and open science. Through this partnership, the Allen Institute, University of Washington, and Fred Hutch Cancer Center will produce models, datasets, and tools open for use by scientists.
Biological Solutions and Objectives
The primary goal of the project is to model and learn the rules that biology uses to build life. Through this effort, new drugs for cancer and neurodegeneration treatments, enzymes capable of breaking down plastics in oceans, and low-power biological computers could be developed.
Scientific Ecosystem and Support
With Nobel laureate David Baker serving as lead scientific director, AI BioDesign is supported by the Fund for Science and Technology within the Paul G. Allen philanthropic ecosystem. The project also features key leaders such as Rui Costa, Marc Malandro, Jay Shendure, Sud Pinglay, and Sanjay Srivatsan.
