AI-powered acne treatment pilot program launched in Utah
Digital health startup Nolla Health has launched an artificial intelligence application that evaluates mild-to-moderate acne patients without requiring an in-person doctor visit.
A Salt Lake City-based startup has launched a one-year pilot program offering artificial intelligence-based prescription recommendations for mild-to-moderate acne patients in Utah.
How the Pilot Program Works
A one-year pilot program launched by Nolla Health enables patients to receive acne treatment through artificial intelligence without having to make an in-person doctor visit.
Application and Subscription Process
By paying a $4.99 subscription fee, patients share basic health information such as family history and upload facial photos taken from different lighting angles to the system.
Artificial Intelligence Analysis
The advanced artificial intelligence system analyzes the uploaded photos to map the patient's skin and generates a tailored treatment recommendation accordingly.
Prescription and Follow-up Process
While prepared prescriptions are sent directly to patients or a local pharmacy, the process is supported by regular weekly follow-up check-ins.
Expert Opinions and Supervision
Dr. Zaid Fadul, chief medical advisor for Nolla, stated that licensed healthcare providers are accessible 24/7 via telehealth and that non-topical medications are referred to the clinical team.
Phased Oversight Model
For the initial 100 patients, physicians will review the AI's recommendation beforehand, while for the subsequent approximately 500 patients, the review will take place after the recommendation, gradually relaxing the oversight.
Regulatory Approval and State Support
Approved by the Utah Office of Artificial Intelligence Policy, the program is testing whether solutions can be found to issues such as workforce shortages in the healthcare sector and long wait times.
